Gemstones and Their Usability in Vedic Jyotish
In Vedic Jyotish, a gemstone is traditionally worn to strengthen the influence of the planet it’s linked to — a Ruby for the Sun, a Pearl for the Moon, and so on. The idea is that each planet in a person’s birth chart affects a different part of their life, and the right stone can help support a weak or afflicted planet rather than fight against it.
Note: the associations below reflect traditional Jyotish belief, not a medical or scientific claim. Gemstone remedies are traditionally recommended only after a proper reading of a person’s actual birth chart, not chosen on their own.
Gemstones and Their Planets in Jyotish
Ruby (Manik) – Planet: Sun
Linked to the Sun — authority, leadership, and vitality. Traditionally worn to support self-confidence and health, especially for people going through a difficult phase in their career or sense of self-worth.
Pearl (Moti) – Planet: Moon
Linked to the Moon — emotions, intuition, and mental peace. Traditionally suggested for emotional instability or stress, worn with the aim of promoting calm and clarity.
Red Coral (Moonga) – Planet: Mars
Linked to Mars — courage, vitality, and strength. Traditionally suggested for low energy, indecision, or a lack of drive.
Emerald (Panna) – Planet: Mercury
Linked to Mercury — communication, intellect, and learning. Traditionally worn to support memory, speech, and business dealings.
Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) – Planet: Jupiter
Linked to Jupiter — wisdom, knowledge, and fortune. Traditionally worn for luck, wealth, and spiritual growth, and often recommended for people in education, law, or religious work.
Diamond (Heera) – Planet: Venus
Linked to Venus — love, beauty, and material comfort. Traditionally worn for harmony in relationships, personal charm, and creative work.
Blue Sapphire (Neelam) – Planet: Saturn
Linked to Saturn — discipline, hard work, and karma. Traditionally worn to ease Saturn’s harder effects and bring stability, particularly during Sade Sati (Saturn’s roughly seven-and-a-half-year transit period).
Hessonite (Gomed) – Planet: Rahu
Linked to Rahu, associated in Jyotish with confusion, fear, and sudden events. Traditionally worn for clarity and calm.
Cat’s Eye (Lehsunia) – Planet: Ketu
Linked to Ketu, associated with sudden reversals and hidden difficulties. Traditionally worn for protection and spiritual growth.
How Gemstone Remedies Are Chosen
In practice, a Jyotish gemstone recommendation usually depends on a few things:
Birth chart analysis: an astrologer looks at which planets in the chart are weak or afflicted before suggesting anything.
Choosing the right stone: not every gemstone suits every chart — the wrong one is traditionally believed to do more harm than good, so the choice is meant to match the person’s actual planetary placements, not a general list.
Purification and activation: once chosen, a stone is traditionally purified through a short ritual before it’s worn.
How it’s worn: traditional practice also specifies the metal it’s set in, which hand or finger it’s worn on, and the day it’s first worn.
